What is Green Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is a well-established, globally traded commodity that is used in many sectors of the economy that are currently reliant on fossil fuels. The “green” in green hydrogen refers to the use of renewable energy, like wind and solar, to power the process of producing hydrogen from water using electrolysis instead of deriving hydrogen from natural gas, which is an emissions-heavy process. Green hydrogen facilities combine wind and solar-generated power plants with a hydrogen production facility, supporting local communities by creating high-paying construction and operation jobs and boosting tax revenue.

Green Hydrogen 101

Traditionally, wind and solar facilities provide electricity to the grid. For these projects, the wind and solar facilities built on leased land will power the production of green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen is a valuable commodity that enables the decarbonization of key sectors of our economy, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation. This short video explains more.

Green Hydrogen Cycle

Once produced through electrolysis, green hydrogen is an incredibly versatile commodity. Green hydrogen can have direct uses in industrial processes, energy storage, as an alternative fuel or for power generation. It can also be used as a feedstock to create green derivative products, such as green ammonia, green fertilizer and green alternatives to fossil fuels such as gasoline, jet fuel and methanol.
